Interest based mediation adopts a clear and structured process designed to support parties to generate and agree to mutually beneficial outcomes. In the first instance, parties meet separately with the mediator for a pre mediation and assessment session to determine logistics and the scope of the mediation. Following this, the mediator coordinates the parties to convene at a mutually agreed time and location to attend mediation.

The mediation process is briefly outlined upon commencement, ground rules are established and each party is provided an opportunity to outline issues from their perspective. The collective issues form the foundation by which an agenda is developed and issues are explored. Following this, parties generate and mutually evaluate options. Individual private sessions are brief and confidential and are conducted to provide time for the parties to consider alternatives. The parties reconvene after private sessions have been conducted to negotiate outcomes which are agreed and documented in a mediated agreement.
